Keeping Your Computer Secure

submitted by William Jimenez, IT Director
Hutchings Court Reporters

Security is a critical component of keeping the information on your computer safe from prying eyes. Most people feel that an antivirus program is all they need to protect a computer. It is a good start, but additional precautions will help keep your computer secure.

Viruses are a diminishing part of malware—malicious software designed to infiltrate a computer. People have become very proficient at blocking viruses, especially those shared via e-mail. Because of this, malware writers are turning to other ways of infecting your computer.

Lawyer Suspended Following Tirade During Deposition

Daily Business Review
submitted by Martha Hutchings
August 02, 2010
A Miami attorney's law license has been suspended for 60 days for disruptive and intimidating behavior in a deposition with DuPont attorneys in a Benlate damages case.
The Florida Supreme Court also ordered a public reprimand, two years probation and mental health counseling for Robert Joseph Ratiner and required him to write letters of apology to people at the deposition. He must be videotaped or accompanied by co-counsel at future depositions.
The discipline was based on a videotape of the deposition showing a DuPont attorney attempting to place an exhibit sticker on Ratiner's laptop computer. He responded by briefly touching the opposing counsel's hand, attempting to run around the table toward him and launching into a tirade, according to the referee's findings.
The court suggested Florida Bar members and law students could view the video as part of a course on professionalism "as a glaring example of how not to conduct oneself in a legal proceeding."

Realtime Updates On Your Google Search Results

Cool Google Search Tip: Google has a feature that brings your search results to life with a dynamic stream of real-time content from across the web. Now, immediately after conducting a search, you can see live updates from people on popular sites like Twitter and FriendFeed, as well as headlines from news and blog posts published just seconds before. When they are relevant, Google ranks these latest results to show the freshest information right on the search results page.

Try searching for your favorite TV show, sporting event or the latest development on a recent government bill or world event. Whether it’s an eyewitness tweet, a breaking news story or a fresh blog post, you can find it on Google right after it’s published on the web.

Teach Your Phone New Tricks

submitted by Martha Hutchings

I just sent out an article to our court reporters about Google Voice and realize that this phone feature would be of interest to our broader audience.

Google Voice gives us a way to consolidate all phone numbers into one number. Your numbers for home, work, mobile, etc. can now ring to one phone! You can even set up caller ID.

There is a feature that lets you listen to the voicemail the caller leaves in realtime (great screening tool) plus you can have voicemail translated to text and tent to your mobile.

You can check out the features and sign up at http://voice.google.com/

#1 Way to Save on Business Travel

submitted by Martha A. Hutchings, Management and Development Director

Recently, I was reading an article on business travel trends and saw references to the various ways employees are asked to cut expenses. They are asked to cut back on meals, to share rooms, to stay in budget hotels, to fly coach and to deal with travel delays that lengthen time away from office and family.

Shortly after reading that, the news was dominated by tales of travelers trapped by Icelandic volcanic ash, and I started to think, “Why isn’t the business community looking for better ways to handle business travel?”

Here’s your solution to saving money when it comes to business travel -- DON’T GO! Arrange a videoconference instead through Hutchings!
