Valentine's Day Treats for Court Reporting Students

submitted by Martha Hutchings

During Valentine's Week, California Court Reporters Association (CCRA) paid tribute to all of the hard-working students studying to be our future court reporters. CCRA's student liaison, Gerie Bunch, chair of the Save Our Students (SOS) program, coordinated with 16 schools statewide to ensure that all students were included in Valentine's Day deliveries. Members from all over the state delivered a Valentine's Day candy/cookie basket to each of the schools.

I was asked to deliver sweet treats to South Coast College. Students, Airriann Guyant and Javier Saavedra are posing with Hutchings' treats. It was great to meet Airriann and Javier and the students' response to the goodies was enthusiastic.

There are approximately 2,325 students statewide studying court reporting, and CCRA is proud to support the future of our profession.

How Valuable is Your Data?

Some of it is critical
o those digital pictures you’ve always intended to print but never got around to
o those emails from family and friends
o those documents you created and saved

Let’s think worst case
o What would happen if disaster struck?
    o Your hard drive dies?
    o Your computer gets stolen?
    o A natural disaster strikes?

How would you feel if all of that data were to go away and never come back? If that strikes a little fear to the heart, you need to consider a backup solution.

Bill Jimenez, IT Director at Hutchings Court Reporters shares his suggestions for backing up your data.

Hutchings Mentor Program - Still Going Strong After 17 Years

submitted by Hillary Sackett, Hutchings Mentor Program Coordinator

Hutchings Court Reporters' Mentor Program is designed to give southern California students an exciting opportunity to receive practical and professional advice along with priority treatment for deposition apprentice hours.  The program complements the instruction of court reporting schools.
Participants shared their comments with us at the end of the 2010-11 session which concluded this past Saturday.
  • "The encouragement offered by your reporters and staff was wonderful.  It was like a shot of enthusiasm for me."
  • "School teaches us how to "write", your training and guidance teaches us how to "work."
  • "I so appreciate real-world learning.  This has been a wonderfully valuable experience, a confidence-booster that I could get no other way.  I especially liked being able to talk with real working court reporters.  I liked our discussions on various scenarios that might come up in a deposition and how to handle them, and how to interact with the attorneys and witnesses."
The application deadline for the 2011-12 Program is April 30, 2011.  The six-session program will begin in late June.

Keeping Your Computer Secure

submitted by William Jimenez, IT Director
Hutchings Court Reporters

Security is a critical component of keeping the information on your computer safe from prying eyes. Most people feel that an antivirus program is all they need to protect a computer. It is a good start, but additional precautions will help keep your computer secure.

Viruses are a diminishing part of malware—malicious software designed to infiltrate a computer. People have become very proficient at blocking viruses, especially those shared via e-mail. Because of this, malware writers are turning to other ways of infecting your computer.

Teach Your Phone New Tricks

submitted by Martha Hutchings

I just sent out an article to our court reporters about Google Voice and realize that this phone feature would be of interest to our broader audience.

Google Voice gives us a way to consolidate all phone numbers into one number. Your numbers for home, work, mobile, etc. can now ring to one phone! You can even set up caller ID.

There is a feature that lets you listen to the voicemail the caller leaves in realtime (great screening tool) plus you can have voicemail translated to text and tent to your mobile.

You can check out the features and sign up at http://voice.google.com/
