Hutchings Mentor Program - Beginning Its 19th Year!

submitted by Hillary Sackett, Hutchings Mentor Program Coordinator

Hutchings Court Reporters' Mentor Program is designed to give southern California students an exciting opportunity to receive practical and professional advice along with priority treatment for deposition apprentice hours. The program complements the instruction of court reporting schools.

Over 550 court reporting students from the following southern California schools have participated in Hutchings Mentor Program over the past 18 years: Cypress College, Cerritos College, Sage College, South Coast College, Downey Adult School, Tri-Community College and Bryan College.

Participants shared their comments with us at the end of the 2012-13 session which concluded in March.

"It is such a great feeling to know that there are people out there that want to help and see you succeed in this field. All of the informative meetings and experiences out in the field with reporters definitely helped my confidence in carrying forward in my education and process in becoming a CSR. This has been a wonderful opportunity."

"Getting a more well-rounded understanding of the world of court reporting, and how to be better prepared to enter the real world of reporting. I find it extremely beneficial and encouraging to have a mentor system and I greatly thank Hutchings for that."

"The sit-in experience is the greatest asset of the program. Very few of my fellow students have the opportunity to sit in with such ease. All the reporters I sat-in with were extremely encouraging about the field and honest as well. They even provided their contact information should I have further questions."

"Hearing from an agency owner and staff giving general and specific information is priceless. I appreciate topics covered that are not regularly discussed in the classroom environment."

The application deadline for the 2012-13 Program is April 30, 2012. The six-session program will begin in mid-June.
